Get real and think about why soldiers still have to fight, it's all about money. Pieter from Eersel, NetherlandsDear people, if you listen and look very carefully, this is just about greed.Eddie from Long Beach, NyA fantastic song, and in my opinion, one of Joe Walsh's best guitar solos. The excesses of America will do us in we don’t need ISIS to do it for us. from Columbus, OhioI concur with what Debi LeFors and Jeff from Cleveland wrote. The spiritual references are replete throughout the entire song. even though I walk through the shadow of death I’m not afraid cause I’m the meanest sonofabitch here.
12/2/2023 0 Comments Alice in wonderland cartoon scenesMy favorite bit involves two birds, one with a mirror for a head and the other looking like a pair of glasses that innocently confuse Alice (unlike everyone else in the film, who maliciously confuse Alice.īut one thing I’ve always liked about it that is frequently considered a negative is what a ridiculous little shit Alice is. But there are some great little moments throughout. As you point out, it’s a case of too many cooks to the extreme. By the time of the 90’s renaissance, animators were assigned characters rather than sequences. It’s an interesting artifact of the way Disney used to divvy up work, assigning separate people to handle separate sequences. Holy cow, I just watched Alice in Wonderland yesterday! I frequently have fond memories of it, but my appreciation for it is more intellectual than emotional. So the Disney that made Alice, Peter Pan, Cinderella and so on, was a very different company than the one that made Fantasia, Pinocchio & Dumbo. Reportedly he considered closing down the feature animation department several times. It was poorly received, Walt got pretty bitter, and started focusing his energy on other things: live-action, the Disney TV shows, Disneyland, and so forth. Those who remained claimed that the atmosphere was completely different post-strike, and the feelings of friendship and camaraderie between the animators and Walt Disney were pretty much gone.įrom what I understand, Saludos Amigos was the last cartoon that Disney himself took much personal interest in. This caused a massive rift between Disney and his employees, and after the strike was over, nearly half of the staff left, including guys who went on to big things later: Walt Kelly, John Hubley, Bill Melendez, etc. But probably more important was the 1941 animators’ strike. (Entering Disney ‘sperg mode) WWII was a huge factor when it came to Disney’s diminishing revenue. In short, not one of Disney’s better works. I’m also fairly certain it’s single-handedly responsible for all the “giant woman” fetish porn that shows up when you google the most innocuous things. Compared to most classic Disney films, it feels insubstantial despite being packed with so much variety. Despite being barely more than an hour long, Alice in Wonderland drags terribly. Aside from a few linking elements that come together in the final courtroom sequence, such as the Mad Hatter’s retinue and the magic mushrooms she fishes out of her pockets, there’s no continuity between the vignettes. It’s just a bunch of standalone scenarios directed by different people, each with its own tone and theme.Īs a result, it feels like Alice is bouncing constantly between unrelated cartoons rather than roaming on a journey. Lewis Carroll’s picaresque children’s book makes pretty decent source material for a Disney movie - the songs and zany talking animals are built right in! - but the problem is that the startlingly expansive list of writers and directors didn’t bother to create any real linking material between these disconnected sequences. Unfortunately, while the individual scenes range from good to great, Alice in Wonderland doesn’t quite work as a movie. In throwing out the rounded and sometimes drab look (occasionally black-and-white) of early shorts, Alice in Wonderland modernized an aging format and lent it new energy. Unlike those older shorts, though, every scene in Alice in Wonderland is drawn in a clean, lean style with crisp lines and absolutely dazzling color. You could put Bosko or Betty Boop in Alice’s place and no one would have blinked. You’ve got a song about a horrible walrus who seduces young clams and eats them alive (literally, not in some creepy metaphorical sense), a bizarre opium-addled caterpillar who poses existential questions, singing racist flowers, a tea party for the insane, and the world’s deadliest croquet match. Taken on its own, any sequence in Alice in Wonderland could stand as a pretty decent Disney theatrical short. It’s less a movie than a series of loosely connected cartoon vignettes, random musical numbers, and surreal comic routines. Not a bad style, but certainly less spectacular than the stunning multi-plane animation and intricate designs of Pinocchio.Īlice in Wonderland, which debuted in 1951, feels like it was meant to be a call back to pre- Snow White animation while adhering to the visual format of the studio’s mid-century work. Or maybe it was the colossal failure of Fantasia that did it. Either way, the studio’s extraordinary golden era of animation wheezed to a sad finale sometime around 1942, and the lush artistry of Dumbo and Pinocchio gave way to a leaner, more economical style with the debut of the classic Bambi and lesser films like The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos. World War II took something important away from the Walt Disney studio. 12/2/2023 0 Comments R less than or equal toUsing case_when to implement If/Else logic Let’s take a look at the syntax for those This explanation above explains how case_when() works if we have a single condition and case that we’re looking for.īut the real power of case_when() comes in when you’re using it to implement if/else logic, or if/elif/else logic with multiple cases. So if the left hand side is looking for the values that match a particular case, the right hand side of the expression provides the output of case_when() for that case. The right hand side of the expression provides the replacement value. This is the “match condition” that we’re looking for to match a particular “case.” The right hand side provides a replacement value Compound logical expression that combines multiple comparison operations with the and/or/not operators ( &, |, !)Įssentially, the left hand side of the expression needs to be a logical expression that evaluates as TRUE or FALSE.This condition is the condition that we’re looking for that indicates membership in a particular case. Inside the parenthesis of case_when, the left hand side is a conditional statement that should evaluate as TRUE or FALSE. Then, inside the parenthesis, there is an expression with a “left hand side” and a “right hand side,” which are separated by a tilde ( ~). To do this syntactically, we simply type the name of the function: case_when(). We can use case_when to implement a simple sort of logic, where the function just tests for s single condition, and outputs a value if that condition is TRUE. Let’s first look at a simple example of the syntax. We’ll first look at the syntax for a very simple use of case_when, and then we’ll move on to a use that has multiple conditions. That being the case, I’ll try to explain this in stages, to help you understand. The case_when syntax can be little bit complex, especially if you use it with multiple possible cases and conditions. Here, we’ll look at the syntax of case_when. To understand how, let’s look at the syntax. You can do it in R with the case_when() function. You need to generate new information with some if-elif-else style logic. So you have one piece of information, and based on that information, you’re trying to generate new values based on conditions. Else if the score is greater than or equal to 60, assign a ‘D’.Else if the score is greater than or equal to 70, assign a ‘C’. At least 25% of the values are equal to five. Twenty-five percent of the values are between one and five, inclusive. In this case, at least 25% of the values are equal to one. For example, if the smallest value and the first quartile were both one, the median and the third quartile were both five, and the largest value was seven, the box plot would look like: The right side of the box would display both the third quartile and the median. In this case, the diagram would not have a dotted line inside the box displaying the median. For instance, you might have a data set in which the median and the third quartile are the same. This video explains what descriptive statistics are needed to create a box and whisker plot.įor some sets of data, some of the largest value, smallest value, first quartile, median, and third quartile may be the same. The spreads of the four quarters are 64.5 – 59 = 5.5 (first quarter), 66 – 64.5 = 1.5 (second quarter), 70 – 66 = 4 (third quarter), and 77 – 70 = 7 (fourth quarter). Each quarter has approximately 25% of the data. The following data are the heights of 40 students in a statistics class.ĥ9 60 61 62 62 63 63 64 64 64 65 65 65 65 65 65 65 65 65 66 66 67 67 68 68 69 70 70 70 70 70 71 71 72 72 73 74 74 75 77Ĭonstruct a box plot with the following properties the calculator instructions for the minimum and maximum values as well as the quartiles follow the example. The box plot gives a good, quick picture of the data. The median or second quartile can be between the first and third quartiles, or it can be one, or the other, or both. The “whiskers” extend from the ends of the box to the smallest and largest data values. Approximately the middle 50 percent of the data fall inside the box. The first quartile marks one end of the box and the third quartile marks the other end of the box. The smallest and largest data values label the endpoints of the axis. To construct a box plot, use a horizontal or vertical number line and a rectangular box. We use these values to compare how close other data values are to them. A box plot is constructed from five values: the minimum value, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile, and the maximum value. In subtraction questions, the focus is on the subtrahend (the value being subtracted). For example, in the question (−2) + 5, the absolute value of the positive integer is greater, so the sum will be positive. More technically, it would be the integer with the greater absolute value. In the case of addition of negative and positive integers, some people suggest looking for the "heavier" value to determine whether the sum will be positive of negative. They can be used to help students see more clearly how certain integer questions end up with positive and negative results. These worksheets include groups of questions that all result in positive or negative sums or differences. The benefit of removing the zeros, however, is that you always end up with only one color and as a consequence, the answer to the integer question. If you remove the zeros, you don't change the answer at all. You do this because -1 and 1 when added together equals zero (this is called the zero principle). Taking out the zeros means removing as many pairs of yellow and red chips as you can. Since you are adding, you put the two groups of chips together, being careful not to flip any of them in the process, of course. Mashing them together should be straight forward. You would model -5 with five red chips and 7 with seven yellow chips. When we say, the correct side, we mean use red for negative numbers and yellow for positive numbers. Since there are a few confused faces in the audience, let us explain a little further. You model the first number with a pile of chips flipped to the correct side and you also model the second number with a pile of chips flipped to the correct side, then you mash them all together, take out the zeros (if any) and voila! you have your answer. They do come in other colors, so you'll have to use your own colors in our description.Īdding with two-color counters is actually quite easy. Two-color counters are usually plastic chips that usually come with yellow on one side and red on the other side. Have you heard about two-color counters and how they can make your life much easier while helping students understand integers better? Sure, you could just teach them the ++, +-, -+, and - rules, but then they would have no color in their lives.
